Tips to Avoid Dangerous Baby Toys

Tongue Clipping: What is it and Does Your Child Need it?

Recently, I was meeting my friend’s new baby and she was telling me how the poor thing has already had to go through a variety of procedures. “Like what?” I asked. As she was running down the list, she finished up by saying, “Oh, and he’s had his tongue clipped.” “What?!?” I had never heard of such a thing, but yes, what sounds like an ancient tribal custom is actually a procedure that is more common than you think. Breezy Mama turned to Go-To Pediatrician, Dr. Jon Conti to give us the lowdown. Read on to learn more, and more importantly, if your child needs to have it done.


What exactly is tongue clipping?


Tongue clipping, or frenulotomy, is a simple office procedure in which an extra piece of tissue, the lingula frenulum, is clipped, releasing the tip of the tongue from the floor of the mouth.? As easily seen here, a piece of skin restricts this tongue tip from freely moving outside the mouth of this crying infant.


Does this hurt the baby? Is it comparable to circumcision: i.e. cut, the baby cries, then immediately forgets about it?


Unlike a circumcision, this is such a quick procedure; most infants cry only for a brief period and almost immediately resume normal behavior.


Why is it necessary?


It’s necessary to help an infant feed properly.? If an infant cannot bring her/his tongue to the top of the palate, suckling breast milk or formula from a bottle can be a problem.


How can a parent know if they need to cut the baby’s tongue?


Many infants have tongue ties; however, the procedure should be considered only in those infants that are having trouble establishing breast feeding, are not gaining weight, are gassy, or whose mothers are experiencing pain during breast feeding.? As a rule of thumb, if your child has a tongue tie, and the mother has received at least 2-3 days of support from a breast-feeding (lactation) specialist without improvement, consult your provider.


At what ages is tongue clipping done?


Typically in the newborn period, before 4 months of age.


Can a child be too old to have the procedure done?


No, but after 4 months of age it may better be performed in the ENT’s (Ear, Nose & Throat, or Otolaryngologist’s) office.


Are there options to avoid having it done?


Patience and working with a skilled lactation consultant can sometimes avoid it.


What can happen if a parent chooses NOT to clip the tongue?


Not clipping the tissue may result in increased gas, reflux, fussiness, tiring before feeding has finished and eventually poor growth.


I’ve heard that if a tongue isn’t clipped, it can affect speech.? Is it better to wait and see once the child is talking, or to go ahead and clip it when they are a baby?


If the tongue tie is not causing feeding difficulties, one can wait.? Some older children who have tongue ties can develop ‘lisps’ due to the difficulty of producing some sounds made at the top of the mouth.? In those cases, being evaluated by an ENT is a good idea.


If a parent decides to move ahead with tongue clipping, who does the actual clipping?? And where is it performed?


It depends upon the age of the child.? Under 4 months, many pediatricians can perform the procedure.? The Otolaryngologist can evaluate and treat older patients.

Movie Review: Mr. Popper’s Penguins

You know the saying don’t judge a book by it’s cover? Well, don’t judge this classic tale updated to current times by its commercials! Seriously, the hubby would make fun of me every time one would come on: you have to watch THAT?


Low and behold, Mr. Popper’s Penguins in theaters June 17th, is actually a sweet, entertaining movie with lots of heart. Bedbugs: What the Heck?!?

Recently, I woke up with a weird rash. It itched like crazy, and was only on the side of my torso. I didn’t think much about it, until I was reading a magazine where a reader had written in asking about bedbugs. I gasped! That’s what caused my rash! I raced to the bed, tore off the sheets, and. . . there was nothing of the sort. But it got me thinking. . . what the heck are bedbugs, and why the sudden national infestation? First, Breezy Mama hears from Elise Adams, who tells her experience of the pests. Next, we turn to bedbug expert, Jeffrey White,?research entomologist for Cooper Pest Solutions and BedBug Central and host of BedBug TV, who gives us the breakdown on what these lil buggers actually are, what they can do to us, and what we can do to them if we have an infestation. Read on for the sick truth. . .

When my husband-to-be joined me in the Pacific Northwest from Los Angeles he brought with him more than his bubbly Bahamian personality! A few days after he moved all his stuff into my garage I started to notice little red, pimply bite marks on my arms. Then a few days later my adorable girls had bites on their hands and legs too.


Yep, you guessed it–bedbugs!


It wasn’t a coincidence either.? I knew he’d battled infestations in L.A., but I was pretty sure that these creatures couldn’t possibly like my sweet little bungalow. I soon learned much more than I ever wanted to know about bedbugs.


At first I was HORRIFIED and completely embarrassed.? My kids, two sweet as pickles toddlers, thought it was funny to have itchy splotches all over their tummies.? I was a bit harder to calm down!? By week two I had vivid nightmares of gigantic nibbly bugs crawling all over me at night.? I was sure I could hear them tearing into my flesh as soon as we switched the lights out.


I thought about shipping my finance and all his stuff right back to Los Angeles!? However, as I learned about these strangely strong insects it was clear that getting rid of these bugs wasn’t going to be that easy.


So Calamine lotion in hand I started following the best advice I could find online.? I bagged up ALL our bedding, curtains, pillows, stuffed animals, towels, and most of our clothing in air-tight plastic bags.? The mattresses I enclosed in plastic sleeves.? I sealed the metal bed frames to the plastic-bagged mattresses with duck tape.? ALL the furniture I turned upside down, taping around all the linings, gaps and holes.? In addition to these steps we eventually treated the entire house with a non-toxic pet and kid-friendly product we ordered online.


While attacking these chores with a vengeance on the one hand, on the other hand I was still very embarrassed.? I have always kept a very neat, orderly home.? And cleaning my house is a daily and weekly routine.? Everything is spic and span at my place!? The way these bugs made me feel–dirty, icky and crawly–was a direct attack on my confidence.


The truth is that if it can happen in my neat, orderly home it can happen to anyone!? Not only did it happen to me, but I happened to those BUGS too!? Within just a few weeks I’d sealed out every possible hiding place and killed every bug I saw. It’s been nearly 3 years since we saw our last bug bite!

What exactly are bedbugs?


Bedbugs are nocturnal parasite that feed solely on blood. A popular misconception is that bedbugs are only found in beds. While this may be a common hiding spot for bedbugs, the pest is also found in areas such as: nightstands, dressers, wall voids, closets and many other places that are not considered.


During feeding, bedbugs will emerge from their hiding spaces during the night to locate a host (typically human) and withdraw blood in a fashion similar to mosquitoes. Feeding roughly takes 5-10 minutes and once complete, bedbugs will retreat to their hiding places and wait another seven days before emerging to feed again. Feeding is initially painless do to an anesthetic that the insect secretes.


An adult bedbug is reddish brown and approximately the size of an apple seed. Once bedbugs reach maturity they are fairly easy to spot. However in their initial life stages bedbugs are only 1 mm and translucent, making them extraordinarily difficult to find by the average person.


Why is there a recent surge of bedbug infestations?


Although recent media coverage can make bedbugs appear to be a new pest in this country, they have been active throughout the nation’s history. In actuality, bedbugs were virtually eradicated from the continental United States around the end of World War II due to the widespread use of a potent chemical called DDT.


Since then, chemicals like DDT were placed under strict regulations due to harmful effects to the environment and personal health. The lack of reasonably and effective liquid residual pesticides provided bedbug populations with an opportunity to flourish during the early 2000s. Increased international travel has also created opportunities for bedbugs to travel from countries that never adopted effective bedbug treatment plans.


In addition to lacking an effective residual pesticide, the lack of public awareness about bedbugs has made the proliferation of this pest exponentially more difficult to control. Many people are unaware that bedbugs are a problem or worse, they may think bedbugs are simply a clever nursery rhyme. It is nearly impossible for an individual or facility to prevent or effectively treat a problem of which they have little knowledge. Do bedbugs carry disease?


Although bedbugs are known to carry 28 separate pathogens, research has yet to demonstrate that bedbugs are a vector or can transmit disease. Recent research has shown that bedbugs can also carry different antibiotic resistant bacteria, but more research needs to be conducted to determine the significance of this finding.


We still identify the psychological distress associated with bedbugs as being the most important health risk. We have seen that having a bedbug infestation can lead to insomnia, depression, social isolation and shame among other emotional ailments.


How do bedbugs spread?


Bedbugs need to be introduced into an environment. They do not jump or fly but are excellent hitch-hikers and can be transported on clothing, luggage, used furniture and various other objects. Once in an apartment or home bedbugs will spread by simply traveling through walls, piping or hitching a ride on household objects.


Risk for bedbug exposure increases in several of the following situations:
‧??? Purchasing or using second-hand furniture and mattresses.
‧??? Entertaining or being an overnight guest.
‧??? Staying in hotels, college dormitories, boarding schools.
‧??? Children coming home from summer camp.


What do bedbugs do to a person?


People react differently to bedbug bites. The most common reaction to a bite is an itchy welt. Some people reacted with an allergic reaction while others may have no reaction at all. In fact, a study done by Dr. Michael Potter found that only 70% of a sample group reported a reaction after being bitten. If a person has a bedbug bite or rash, what can they do to make themselves feel better?


Generally speaking, bedbug bites will take care of themselves in a short amount of time. For more persistent or sever reactions it is best to contact a doctor or skin professional.


How does your mattress get bedbugs?


First, it is important to note that the most commonly infested portion of the bed is NOT the mattress but rather the box-spring. This is because it is close to the food source (you), is not often disturbed and the wooded or metal structure provides bedbugs with numerous hiding spaces.


Mattresses are typically infested in the following ways:
1.??? The mattress (or box-spring) is refurbished or used and already has a bedbug infestation.
2.??? Bedbugs are introduced to the mattress by placing infested personal items such as luggage, handbags, clothing or other items on, near or under the bed.
3.??? Bedbugs are introduced into a room and are attracted to the bed when seeking a blood meal.


There are a variety of steps people can take to protect their bed from infestation. Chief among these steps is the use mattress and box-spring encasements. These are invaluable tools because they make spotting an infestation much easier, the encasements protect beds from infestation and can save beds that are currently infested. Finally, mattress and box-spring encasements make the treatment and inspection process easier for pest management professionals to treat.


How do you know you have bedbugs?


The most reliable way to confirm you have bedbugs is to contact an entomologist or pest management professional and have them identify a sample collected from your home. It is also helpful to become knowledgeable about the basic signs and symptoms of an infestation.? Some of these signs can include:


‧??? Going to bed and waking with bites, welts or rashes. Bite marks may appear in a rows and clusters.
‧??? Dark spotting or blood droplets on mattresses or bedding. These are waste products bedbugs excrete while digesting a blood-meal.
‧??? Visible observation of eggs, molted insect skin or the insect. The failure to locate an insect does not indicate they are not present. Adult bedbugs are difficult to locate and immature bedbugs can be difficult to see due to their size.

If you have bedbugs, does it mean your house is unclean?


Absolutely not! This is a harmful misconception about bedbugs that has created a social stigma that makes people ashamed to talk about it. Bedbugs are in no way associated with filth or poor hygiene and parents need to start talking about this problem.


If you think you have them, what are your next steps?


If you discover that you have bedbugs your next step should be to call a knowledgeable pest management firm. Attempting to treat this problem on your own can actually complicate the infestation and spread bugs even further throughout your home and drive up treatment costs. Other simple steps can include:


1.??? Reducing Clutter: Clutter provides bedbugs with an innumerable amount of hiding places. Reducing clutter make the treatment process easier.
2.??? Removing the bugs: Just because you have bedbugs does not mean that you have to wait for a professional to kill them. Bedbugs can be crushed with a rag and there are over-the-counter sprays such as Stop Bugging Me that can kill bedbugs. Vacuuming the bedbugs away is also an option as long as the vacuum has a bag and filter to prevent escape. Canister vacuums can become re-infested. Just remember: this is not a replacement for professional services.


3.??? Do not place items under the bed- Because the bottom of a box-spring is an ideal hiding place for bedbugs, storing items beneath it will provide this pest with an opportunity to infest other items and be transported.


4.??? Launder items regularly- Heat is deadly to bedbugs, a wash cycle and a dry cycle of 120 degrees has been shown to kill all life stages of bedbugs.


5.??? Install mattress and box-spring encasements- Once beds are encased any bugs that may be trapped within the encasement will unable to escape or feed and will eventually die. In addition, once the beds are protected, other bedbugs cannot penetrate the encasement and thus cannot infest the mattress or box spring. Instead, bedbugs are restricted to the surface of the encasement where they are easy to spot and remove.


There are many mattress and box spring encasements available to the consumer; however most of these encasements have not been designed specifically for use with bedbugs. Instead, most encasements available to the consumer are designed to either protect the bed from becoming stained or provide relief for people with allergies to dust mites. It is very important to be sure that the encasement that you purchase has been specifically designed for bedbugs and has scientific data to support the effectiveness of the product.


6.??? Don’t change where you sleep- Some people believe that they can avoid bedbugs by sleeping in a different area of their home. Once people identify that their bed is infested they will often begin sleeping in a different bedroom or on the sofa. However, if you move to a different area of the home to sleep, the bedbugs will find you. Changing where you sleep is likely cause movement of bugs throughout the structure, making it more difficult to eliminate the infestation. Even if you move out of your home, you risk bringing bedbugs with you to your temporary residence and infesting that area as well. Not only can you spread the bedbugs, but when you return home the bugs will be waiting to great you. Remember, bedbugs can survive many months, and in some cases up to a year or more without feeding. Although it sounds like a grim choice, it is best to continue sleeping in the infested area until the bedbugs are eliminated.

Angela Lansbury on How Kids Movies Have Changed

Listen, I watched Murder She Wrote faithfully, too. And Beauty and the Beast? Hello! It was a treat to get to meet Angela Lansbury and while with her I couldn’t help but wonder ‘who done it’… Sitting in a room with the actress and an amazing group of mom/dad bloggers, we got to talk her infamous TV role as Jessica Fletcher (“it did not require any great artistry”), whether Jim Carrey got out of hand on the set when filming with him in her role as Mrs. Van Gundy in Mr. Popper’s Penguins in theaters June 17th, and her feelings on how movies for kids have changed.


You’ve done a whole range of acting, whether it be villains or even the voiceover for Disney. But, I think most people remember you for Murder She Wrote.


True.


Is that a good thing or a bad thing?


Well, on the one hand, it has been a blessing because it made me known worldwide. I have to say that, even though the role of Jessica Fletcher was one that one almost walked through. I say that with love and appreciation of the character that was given to me to play, but it did not require any great artistry to play Jessica Fletcher.


But, I loved her because she was such a straight on woman with charm and with a good brain and a wonderful liberal outlook on life. And I just felt that she represented women in the best possible way. And that intrigued me.


I think that was the reason the character was such a successful person in television, even though she wasn’t a pop heroine by any manner of means. She wasn’t Mary Tyler Moore. She was Jessica, and that’s okay. She’s still out there all over the world.


And you were a role model to me and to so many women. Were there any role models for you when you were first starting out in this business?


Well, I would say that when I was growing up, this was in the 1940s, it was wartime, you know? So, the women who really kind of grabbed me as a young kid, as a student, were women like Katharine Hepburn and certainly Bette Davis and Jean Arthur. Jean Arthur was very unique. I just loved her. She had a kind of a wonderful funny way of talking like this. She says, “Well, I don’t know what’s going on here.” There were some great movies that she was in with Joel McCrea. And I’m talking about people you’ve never heard of, but these people were the heroines and heroes of my era as a youngster who were a lot younger than you are today. But, you’d asked me who were the role models.


You’ve been in some of the biggest and most popular kid friendly movies out there. Bedknobs and Broomsticks, my kids love that movie.


Oh, it’s wonderful, funny stuff.


I was curious how you feel about being in a movie like Mr. Popper’s Penguins. Is it still that kid friendly movie — does it feel the same now as it did when you were making Bedknobs and Broomsticks and Beauty and the Beast?


Not really. It’s a different category, I think. It’s certainly kid friendly. And Popper, because of the children in it and because of the penguins, which are the catalyst for the father and the children, that is something that’s? universal.


And I think that makes it very appealing from a point of view. Whether children will take to it with the same crashing devotion that they did for things like Bedknobs and Broomsticks, which incorporated a cartoon as well, if you think about the special cartoon stuff they did in that, and it’s underwater and that wonderful football game in that. I mean, there’s tremendous humor in that.


There’s intrigue with penguins in the penguin movie. But, I think they’re slightly different. I don’t think that they’re the same. I shouldn’t probably say that. But, nevertheless, I mean, how many years later are we talking about here? Fifty? Thirty? Forty? Forty, yes.


We won’t let on. But, anyway, I think you know what I mean. Things are done so differently these days, where in those days they were done by the book. We used to have storyboards, little pictures of each shot that we were going to make.


For instance, in Bedknobs and Broomsticks, I was amazed because, being a kind of rather serious actress, I thought, “Oh, but I don’t want to turn around and talk to him there. I want to do something different.” “No, no, no, no, you turn around and you say that line to him there.” And so, you were kind of caged into a style of acting, really. That’s what you did. It was quite different, but it was effective.


So, you had a little more freedom then, this time around?


Oh, much more, except you don’t.


You do but you don’t?


No, you don’t.


But, are the directors more willing to let you offer your interpretation or vision now than they were back during the storyboarding?


Yes, certainly. Although there’s not much room for that, because these days you’re always working on a schedule, a time schedule which is cut and dry because every minute costs.


And if you’re shooting in a very famous gallery like the Guggenheim in New York and you have eight hours of night shooting to manage to shoot X number of shots, there isn’t much time for fooling around.


And there’s no time to rehearse. That’s one of the drawbacks of movies, for my money, is you never really get to rehearse, because they can’t spend the time they have not putting it on film.


You mentioned about role models for women, and that was one thing that I was curious about. Do you see a lot more opportunities for older actresses? Male actors normally get much more work. Do you see a lot more roles opening up for older female actresses?


No, I don’t. I really don’t. I’m sorry to say I don’t. I don’t see it at all. Do you?


No.


Can you name any recently?


Even being a female actress is a tough part, because I think a lot of the time you’re playing the romantic lead of somebody or a sidekick to somebody.


Yes.


And once in a while when it is this, then it’s normally an action figure or something. But, I don’t see it much in regular females, so I was just curious about how you see it or whether there’s a future, or whether it’s a short lived career for females.


I’m afraid it is. It is a short lived career. And I’ve said recently that’s one of the reasons that I haven’t really gone back into movies is because there weren’t any roles. There weren’t any roles that I would really want to play.


This [Mr. Poppins] role, yes, I can play this because she’s a character and that’s good. I kind of specialize in those kind of weirdos, you know? I’m really not that way at all. I’m more like Jessica, really.


So, it’s not easy. But, those are the only things that are forthcoming. There’s this movie out called Beginners– have you been reading about it?


Yes.


What is that great actor who’s in that who plays a man in his 70s who’s dying who comes out, right?


Christopher Plummer.


Chris Plummer.


That’s it.


Thank you. What a great role, and he’s a man. You know, he and I are about the same age. And he gets to play that part, you know? There aren’t many women who’d get to play that kind of role. Not just because he comes out. I’m not talking about that — I don’t want to play a woman who comes out necessarily, although that would be interesting. Nevertheless I think it’s great.


Was there a lot of ad libbing on the set with Jim Carrey when you were working with him?


No, I wouldn’t say so. He’s all business. He really is. He’s totally immersed in what he’s doing. And he’s very thoughtful, very considerate, and works with you.


Our director certainly was very strong about what he was going for and how he was going to set the scene up. And certainly Jim worked very closely with him. They would shoot the scene and Jim would run by and look at it on the monitor, and they would try little slightly different things.


Is there a role in your career that you’d like to revisit?


That’s a good question. I don’t think so. I tend to kind of shut the door on roles. There’s been such an enormous variety if you think about the work that I’ve done in film. Nothing that I’ve ever done in film has been enough for me to show what is really there. It’s always been fragmented, in a curious way. I’ve never had the opportunity to play a role which began and then went to a middle and then culminated in the end. I don’t know who has, but I’ve always felt there was something that I wished I could have acted that I’ve never had a chance.


What drew you to this [Mr. Popper's Penguins] role? Did you want to do this movie because of the story or the people that you were working with?


Well, I was kind of coerced into doing it, quite frankly because I didn’t think there was really a place for me in it in the first place. But it suddenly became an interesting character. And when it became a woman who had a warmth buried under all those layers, I thought, “Well, yes, I can do something with this.”

This might not be the best time to take all decisions by yourself and so it is always better to talk to the people who care about you in case of such issues. Treat Blackheads With These Great Natural Tips

None of us need to be introduced to what a black head is. It is one of the most common skin problems faced by men and women of all ages. Blackheads are more common among oily skin as oily skin produces more sebum which gets clogged in the pores and gets oxidised forming black or brown spots all over the face.


Blackhead formation is mostly found in the face, chest and back as these are the areas that are prone to sweating. Most women get blackheads on their face as a result of heavy make up getting clogged in the pores. Oily skinned people have open pores that are easy targets for blackheads to freely enter and settle comfortably. Environmental problem in another grave reason that triggers the formation of blackheads on the skin.


Formation of black heads need not be taken as a serious skin condition. They make the skin appear dotted and unattractive. Great home remedies can be employed for removal of black head formations. Most people with oily skin have blackheads. So the first step towards blackhead removal is the control of oil in the skin.


Fuller’s earth absorbs all the excess oil from oily skin, preventing any chance for formations of blackheads and pimples. Prepare a mixture of Fuller’s earth and rose water and apply on the face, taking special care to cover areas of blackheads. Leave it on till it dries and wash off with warm water. Rose water is very good for toning of skin and also in removing the dirt and excess oil from the skin. Do this twice a day to prevent as well as remove blackhead formations permanently.


Drumstick leaves, pods and lemon juice can be mixed to form a paste and applied on the area of black heads. This will remove dark spots, acne and black heads effectively leaving you with a fresh and flawless skin worthy or admiring glances.


Baking soda is something which is stocked in every house. Take one tablespoon or baking soda and add four cups of water to it. Bring it to a boil. Take a towel and soak in this water. Wring dry and apply on the area of black heads. Do this 4-5 times. The pores on the face will expand due to the steam, removing the dirt, blackheads and grime along with it. Now mix curd and rice flour and apply on the face. When it is dry, wash it with cold water. Use this every day till all your blackheads vanish.


Radish contains a bleaching agent and can be used for bleaching the skin as well along with the removal of blackheads. To enjoy its double benefit, grind the radish seeds along with water to form a paste. Apply on the face and massage gently on the areas of black heads. The slightly coarse powder will exfoliate the skin, removing all the blackheads along with it. This paste removes the entire blemish from the skin, revealing beautifully glowing skin evolving from within.


Honey has great benefits for the skin. Without even knowing what benefits honey can give your skin, you can use them for all sorts of skin ailments. Apply pure organic honey on your entire face, especially on the blackheads and leave it for twenty minutes to remove blackheads. Continue the treatment till your blackheads are gone. If you want better result, mix honey and sugar and use it for scrubbing your skin and exfoliation. Regular exfoliation will remove and prevent blackhead formations.


Make a paste with fenugreek leaves. Apply on the face every day before going to bed and wash it off with warm water after it is dry. Fenugreek has anti inflammatory properties and hence prevents acne, blackheads, whiteheads and other skin eruptions.


Cinnamon and lemon juice has great properties that can leave your skin completely blemish free. Mix one teaspoon of cinnamon powder and one teaspoon lemon juice and apply on the face. Leave it till it dries and wash it off with warm water. You can also massage the cinnamon gently for an exfoliation effect. Adding a pinch of turmeric to this mixture will enhance its powerful properties. Use this mixture everyday for removal as well as prevention of blackheads.


Mixing the juices of cucumber and carrot along with a crushed clove of garlic is greatly beneficial for treating blackheads. The vitamins, minerals and nutrients fortify your skin and the cucumber helps in clearing the black spots and heads. Garlic prevents all sorts of skin infections. Use this mixture every day for great looking skin.


Steaming is one of the best remedies and the simplest one for treating blackheads. Steaming?? opens the pores which are clogged and loosens the blackheads. Add a few drops of lemon juice and neem leaves in the steam in order to prevent breakouts and pimples. Steam your face once a week and wipe or scrub with honey and sugar scrub to remove the loose blackheads on the skin.


Make a paste of grapes along with the seeds. Apply it on the areas of blackheads and leave it on for twenty minutes. Wash it off with warm water. You can also use the pulp of tomato in the same way to get great and fairer looking skin.
