Listen, accidents will happen with kids and if they require a trip to the emergency room, then I’ve got some serious money (if your insurance is as bad as mine) and time saving tips for you. Unfortunately, either I or someone else had to learn the hard way and Breezy Mama believes that means it’s our duty to save others from the trouble.
Tooth Emergencies
Do not head to the ER. If you head to the ER, you will wait that awful long, who knows exactly how long, yet so long you wonder if you will EVER be called wait, just to be told that you need to go take your child to a dentist. AND THEY WILL CHARGE YOU for that info. If you have amazing insurance, good for you. If you don’t, that bit of info will save you a great deal money! Either way, it saves you a ton of time.
Head to Children’s Hospital vs. ER
In fact, the same situation may apply for most non-life threatening emergencies with kids. They will have you wait to be seen… and wait… and wait… just to CHARGE you to tell you to head to the Children’s Hospital. So, if it’s not a “kid knocked tooth out” disaster where you call the dentist, then for other bumps and broken bones, head to the Children’s Hospital ER versus your local ER when possible… because you will get the bill from BOTH.
Hair Around the Toe
Recently, one of my babies got a hair wrapped so tightly around her toe that it was cutting off circulation and we could not get it off. As always in these situations, it was the weekend and our pediatrician suggested we go to the ER… make that the Children’s Hospital ER which he specifically stated (see above). Panicked that she could actually lose her toe, we were on our way. What was the solution once there? They applied some Nair! Yep, a $5 solution, but instead I am stuck with countless medical bills. Sigh.
Nail Polish Remover
As a little bonus, let me also share that if your child gets marking pen on a dining room table, door or other wooden surface, apply a tad of nail polish remover and it will come right off. Be careful not to get carried away as it could strip the wood, but for smaller areas it’s a cheap fix.
