The Importance of Tryptophan in Breast Milk

Many people don’t know that mother’s milk is rich with tryptophan that is the basic substance of brain serotonin that is important for memory, sleeping, and relaxation.

Tryptophan is one of the essential amino acids that is important for body since they were born until they grow older to create serotonin. The learning that base of brain, tryptophan is metabolized into amino that called serotonin.

Lack of Tryptophan.

Because Tryptophan is the basic substance of serotonin, so it can be concluded that lack of Tryptophan can cause the serotonin level is low. Actually, the serotonin is one of the neo transmitters (chemical molecule that transfers thought and feeling to all nerves mesh and changes us every time). Based on book that is written by Jean Copper said that serotonin can improve memory and prevent from the brain disorder because of the age. Dr. Pierce Howard said that serotonin is related with sleeping and relaxation and the low serotonin will be related with the depression.

James W. Prescott, Ph.D from Institute of Humanistic Science relates the lacking of serotonin with the negative aspects such as: depression, uncontrolled impulsive action, suicide, murdering, and the consuming of drugs at children or adult. He said that there are two things at the baby period that cause children or adult lack of serotonin so they do the negative actions. The first is the failure of physical affection bonding with mom such as mom is rarely to hug, to kiss, and to carry. The second cause is mom doesn’t breastfeed the baby. We know that breastfeeding is the natural way to make sure that there is affection in the relationship between mom and baby. But most of us don’t know yet that breast milk and colostrums contain tryptophan – the essential amino acid that is important for developing brain serotonin that can’t be found in formula milk.

The Breast Milk is rich with Tryptophan

All the needs of essential amino acids must be fulfilled from the outside of body through diet treatment because body can’t create it by itself. Mother’s milk is the food that is rich with Tryptophan. Based on Food and Agricultural Organization, the breast milk contain 31 mg of Tryptophan per kilo calorie.

Actually all milk products from mammalian contain Tryptophan. But Eric L Lien the researcher from Nutrition research and Development, a formula milk factory at Philadelphia, said that the concentrate of alpha-lactalbumin (the dominant protein in mother’s milk) is lower in formula milk. But the beta-lactoglobulin (the protein that can’t be found in mother’s milk) is dominant in whey protein in formula milk. Alpha- lactalbumin is rich with tryptophan that is generally limited amino acids in formula milk, said Lien.

Lien said for fulfilling all the needs of amino acids at the baby, the protein concentrate in formula milk must be made higher than the protein concentrate in mother’s milk. Actually, lactoglobulin and bovine serum albumin that contains in the milk produced by cow often cause allergy at baby. But, lien said that now there is formula milk that the level alpha- lactalbumin is improved and the level of beta- lactoglobulin is decreased. In other words, the formula milk is rich with tryptophan but the protein level is low so it is safe for baby. So now, what do you choose? The real tryptophan or the tryptophan made by human?
